An Open Email to NSW Premier re His Fasting for Ramadan

Hon Mike Baird MP (Member for Manly)

NSW Premier

NSW Parliament House

Macquarie St

Sydney NSW 2000

Dear Mr Baird

I wish to express my concerns to you regarding the media reports that you fasted on the last day of Ramadan. As a NSW voter and a Christian, I would ask for an explanation as to why you would do this as apparently you do not subscribe to the Islamic belief nor do you live your life according to the Qu’ran. I also noted with interest that while you were fasting for Ramadan, Muslim extremists under the ISIL umbrella were desecrating 1800 year old churches in Mosul, Iraq and destroying the grave of the biblical Prophet Jonah. I don’t think I saw in the media any response or outcry from your Government regarding this desecration.

I noted that your fellow conservative Federal Government member Julie Bishop wrote an open letter to Muslims in Australia at the start of Ramadan celebrating the beginning of the Muslim Holy Month. Myself and other Christians are looking forward to hearing from the Federal and no doubt State Government at Easter 2015 when we have our Holy Celebrations. I would hate to think that Muslims somehow have preferential treatment in NSW or Australia as I can’t ever remember a letter of support being written from a Federal Government for the Christian celebration of Easter.

I have heard that you have a Christian faith and I also have some level of understanding of the complexities of politics and people groups but to be honest – to the man in the street – you and the Federal Government seem to be falling over yourselves to pander to Muslims right now at the discrimination of Christians and indeed other religious groups.

Makes me wonder why?

I look forward to your reply and explanation

  1. and I look forward to hearing the premier’s response…should he choose to give you one. Yeah, I’m not holding my breath.

  2. Wow! I had no idea Australia was pandering so. Disappointing.

  3. Could it be, perhaps, that marginalising muslims and being intolerant of their beliefs is hurtful rather than helpful, and puts up barriers that just fuel hatred and resentment?

Could it be that by bridging the gap and opening up channels of communication, by sharing a token celebration with someone of a different faith, perhaps some muslims may even be open enough to learn more about our way of life, and start to question that which they’ve been taught?

When you complain about a politician “neglecting” christian followers in favour of muslims, do you forget that Jesus came not for the healthy but for the sick? That when the shepherd loses one sheep, he should leave all the rest and go find it?

Honestly, have you even read the bible? You’re supposed to be the light of the world, being the reflection of the love of Jesus here on earth, to other people, those who aren’t already in your social club, people like muslims. For someone who should be dead to self, alive through Christ, I’m seeing a lot of self in your words.

If Jesus did exist, and if he was anything like he’s described in the bible, I hope he would be ashamed of this kind of attitude. I know plenty of people for whom this attitude is exactly what turns them off religion. I’ve had people comment, thanking me for showing them there is “still good in the world” when I oppose stuff like this. Isn’t that in itself testament to the failure of the church to be the “light of the world”, when an atheist can be seen as being the moral superior?

    • This is the typical kind of inactive response that always sounds very biblical and so inclusive but fails to actually address the issue.

      • I.. I’m just quoting the bible Peter. The important bits, the ones Jesus actually said. I’m no theologian but I always figured the red letters were the most important. If you don’t think they’re practical or sufficient to address the issues, there’s probably someone else you should take that up with.

Maybe you should have a hard think about what “the issues” actually are. Jesus certainly didn’t feel the need to marginalise those of different religions. Although he certainly called out the flaws in the religion of the Samaritans, he still reached out to them, he even postulated that one of them could be an example of great good…

    • I’m pretty certain, at least how I read & comprehended it, that Peter in no way targets nor marginalises the Muslims or their Faith, rather he queries will the same courtesies be extended to Christians & the Christian faith or is this just an exercise in pandering exclusively to one group for political gain & PR purposes. It seems a very reasonable & very valid question to ask & in no way compromises Christian values in asking it.

    • That is like saying we must go out and sin so we can connect with the sinner. That is not what we are called to. God has a standard and we rise to that standard, not sink to a lower standard.

    • So in your mind all Christians should be tolerant & accepting of the mulsim beliefs. So the Christians of Mosul, Syria, & Lybia should display this level of acceptance & tolerance so as not to be hurtful to the marginalised muslims before of after the muslim beheads them? While these poor marginalised muslims say & do nothing about the murderous members of their “religion” & the weak politicians pander to them for their votes the really concerned people of Australia will only see an alien group of people whose beliefs & culture is so removed from the Australian way of life that they can only be looked upon with distrust & suspicion as to what their end game really is.

    • Tom McQuarrie,
      In answer to your verbiage:

      1) Mosul.
      2) Respect and breathing have much in common. The host body soon dies if all the traffic is one way, for survival a two way action is required.

  4. As far as I read & comprehended it, Peter in no way targeted or marginalised Muslims or anyone of the Muslim faith.

Rather he was questioning if the politician was going to extend the same courtesies to the Christian & other faiths.

He notes the politician’s actions seem questionable given he’s not a Muslim at all?

He closes stating he wonders why this politician along with others are going out of their way to pander specifically to this group & not to others?

Seems a valid comment as well as a valid question leaving the indicated politician plenty of room to respond.

    • Well when christians enjoy incredible freedoms in this country, and a politician merely offers a token olive branch to the muslim community, forgive me if I don’t see it as questionable at all to show a little empathy for his fellow man. It’s not *pandering*, it’s called being a decent human being.

I’m sure the philistines had the same questions of Jesus when he dined with Matthew…

  5. Thank you Peter

  6. Interesting fact thanks to ABC’s RN station from this Sunday just gone;
Shiite Muslims don’t recognise government. The only law they follow is that preached by their Imam…
    Wonder if the Premier knows…

    • Peter Pilt – I would like your response & “guidance” as it were on my points below. Not since WWII have we witnessed an evil oppressive ideology begin to take hold of vast swathes of our planet – mostly through force & terrorism, but also through breeding. Our grandparents fought & died in WWI & WWII to stop, protect & remove an evil ideology & imperialism. Isn’t islam both? How are we to protect ourselves from radical islam when there is no way of knowing a moderate from a radical until its too late? We see images of islamic “behaviour” daily – both in Australia & around the world – Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, China, Sweden, Norway, UK, Philippines, Thailand, Myanamar, South Sudan, CAR, Germany, Spain, France…the list goes on. We constantly hear of groups like ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab, Abu Sayyaf, Hamas – committing atrocious acts on innocent civilians or even soldiers. They all claim to be islamic – but we’re told they are not, and they say they are truly islamic but the deniers not…So – we’re left with knowing islam to be a dangerous ideology, but protected as a “religion” by the mainstream media & politicians. Its actually not just a religion but a complete rule of muslims life – and it itself is 95% political & 5% religious. Why do people still tolerate it? You may say (as others do) that there are good & bad muslims (moderate vs radical) – but they all read the koran & all follow Mohammad & his lifes deeds in the hadiths. Some take them literally (orthodox) & others not (heterodox). So we can say orthodox muslims are the radicals, heterodox moderate. But saying this is basically saying that in the run up & during WWII & Nazism’s rise – there were moderate Germans & then there were Nazi’s. What did the moderates do – zero. They let the Nazi’s rule, and they enjoyed the spoils. Same is true with moderate muslims & radicals. The radicals will ensure we are subjugated & shariah law enforced – and the moderates don’t have to do anything & still they both win. Why are we as a great nation sitting back & watching this all happen? Why don’t the many Christian denominations join together, and also together with Hindu’s, Buddhists, Jews & all other non-islamic (infidel) faiths and work to remove this plague once & for all .

  7. Well articulated and respectfully well put Pete.

  8. NSW State election is next March. Elections are inevitably won and lost via seats in the Western suburbs of Sydney. A lot of Muslims live in the Western suburbs. Mike Baird is an intelligent guy. Or put better: Baird wants to make sure he wins the next election. Ramadan act was nothing more sinister than that

  9. it will be interesting to see the reply. I wonder if it’ll be their standard send out letter ? Very well written Peter 🙂

  10. The so-called ‘religion of peace’ (Islam) recognizes no other government on earth that is not 100% rooted in the Koran (Mr Baird is thereforepandering to the sector of his electorate who plan to dismantle his government)….indoctrinates their followers to lie, decieve and ultimately kill any ínfidel (Christian, Jew, Budhist …even Athiest) who does not wholly believe and follow their teachings. Muslims boast that they love death rather than life – although many are more moderate – to the degree that their own ‘moderates’ run the risk of beheading or crucifixion. The ultimate plan is world dominion at the cost of every non-believer’s life.
The truth is that ‘the religion of peace’ is in fact is the most evil, blood-thirsty, inhumane ideology ever to be espoused amongst humanity in the entire history of the Globe.

    • I completely agree with you. Our grandparents fought & died in WWI & WWII to stop, protect & remove an evil ideology & imperialism. Isn’t islam both? How are we to protect ourselves from radical islam when there is no way of knowing a moderate from a radical until its too late?

  11. I totally agree with this letter and I do not understand why our governments have betrayed the Australian people in this way. I watch Muslim’s praying in the street’s , burning our flag , breaking our laws in so many way’s , insulting our way of life and the silence from our governments at all levels astounds me.

We see on so many news outlets the atrocities that are being commited around the world by the Muslims and yet silence from our leaders. Our forefathers must be looking down from above with total disgust at what we have let happen to our once great country which so many gave their lives for and our freedom. I am so sick of hearing about this one diplomatic diplomacy stuff also. I call a spade a spade and the Muslim race who abide by the Koran are a vile breed , they will not simulate with our society and way’s and will eventually turn against us as they are doing elsewhere. They have one objective and that you is to wipe out all Christians on this earth and this is happening TODAY all around the world.
I ask for action NOW against these people before it’s too late for Australia and expect our governments to open their eye’s or all Australian’s will at the next elections.

    • You are right on the money john, i wonder will it take a reenactment of the Lee Rigby murder for these pollies to wake up to those that want to tear this country apart?

  12. The recent proliferation of attempts to have Islam’s Sharia laws and our rules changed to please a minority, recognised in my country again becomes a question of altering our constitution and laws, to accomodate the acceptance of a legal system that will change our laws to accept theirs! A number of wives, (not one) Which it is as I understand becoming the responsibility of our welfare system to support untold numbers of children by their rules and our welfare laws! It would seem they will share our rules when it suits them and wish to force theirs on us to also suit them! Definitely unconstitutional! And our Police Force being told to be tolerant towards them as they openly and blatantly break our laws!
The Greens were seen publicly addressing a crowd of protesters in Sydney this last week supporting Hamas and Palestine, while condemming Israel’s defence of it’s country from attack by these so called Palestinians! Labor literally opened the flood gates for an invasion! It has always been Israel’s policy to wish to be allowed to live in Peace and to say they are attacking Palestinians and Hamas is absurd beyond belief! They are defending their right to live in peace! So I would ask what the real purpose of this Green support is and would suggest as has been the case so many times before, a subterfuge to alter Our Constitution to suit their socialist agenda of control of our people by any means, political gain in the West, stealth and cunning being fairly obvious!
We have in our country a constitution that is recognised by a large section of the World as being almost priceless, one that has evolved to become a wonderful beacon of hope to so many migrants who have come and been welcomed to our shores! The cultures and hopes they have brought with them have indeed enrichened our culture “they have wished to join.” Unfortunately we have also allowed the infiltration of a society and culture that has taken extreme advantage of our love for sharing our wonderful country, and wish to change it to suit a society that is so opposite in it’s goals, as evidenced almost everywhere else world wide, to be bringing a division to our country that is both antagonistic and very threatening to our very future! The Greens are supportive of this regime that is oppressing so much of the world by sheer brutality and terrorism and barbaric murders and practices as seen by Senator Riahannon’s support at that Sydney protest against Israel’s right to defend it’s people! Who may I ask is going to stand and defend Australians? All those who owe no allegiance to Islam or Sharia? In other words at this time, still the majority?

  13. Peter I would like your response & “guidance” as it were on my points below. • In acknowledging the common routes of Christianity and Islam, Mike Baird is conveying to the Muslims in our society that we have more in common than that which separates us. It’s a fallacy to identify Muslim extremist groups as indicators of the attitude of all Muslims, just as I, as a Christian shudder to think that Joseph Kony, of The Lord’s Resistance Army in any way reflects my attitudes.

  14. Dear Ref. Pilt,
I am afraid Mr. Baird’s actions had disowned himself from Christian faith. While he thought it might be politically advantageous, he was actually cutting himself off from God !

  15. Whilst there may have been no letters of support, is it not substantial that the lord’s prayer is used to open the federal parliamentary sessions?

If you truly believe that there is preferential treatment of religious groupings other than those that identify as Christian in Australia, I suggest you take a long look at our society. If anything, egalitarianism should be welcomed.

  16. We totally agree with your letter, Peter Pilt. Very disappointed to hear also, of the open letter that Julie Bishop wrote to the Muslims of Australia, celebrating Ramadan.
We pray people will realise that the reason we live in such a wonderful, peaceful place is because our laws in this country are based on Christian principles. God loves all people including Muslims, and we love and pray for them too, but we do not love what they stand for, see lists of activities and beliefs already mentioned in some of the replies.

  17. Good letter ! By siding with the Muslims, you are siding against Christianity – our country is based on Christian beliefs but they are slowly being eroded by those wanting to impose their own laws and their own culture onto us. Every country should retain their own culture and their own beliefs and Government/s here in Australia and elsewhere should be enforcing their culture and their laws on those who wish to live in their countries and not allowing their laws to be changed to suit a minority group – otherwise that minority group will not remain in the minority but will take over – which we see happening rapidly in other countries.
Hamas has said that they want to ‘wipe Israel off the map’ – how do you negotiate with people who want to kill you ?? Israel is not the aggressor, Hamas is – Israel is defending herself against her attacker which is exactly what she should be doing.
Very interested to see what the reply is to your letter.
