How Did We Become a Nation of Labellers?

In today’s Sunday Mail (2/1/2022), there is a Queensland centric, patriotic call for most Queenslanders, from the Editors of the Sunday Mail, to make 2022 a ‘greater year’. As they finish, they say, So come on Queensland, let’s do this, show some love, hug a hater….

I read this and I wondered, when did we as a nation become so comfortable with labelling people?

Seriously, ‘hug a hater’….well I literally hate cabbage, so do I fit into that category? No. The Sunday Mail is talking about people who disagree with the current regime of vaccinations.

But it begs the question, why are we so comfortable with labelling people?

We label people who disagree with us ‘Haters’.

We label people who don’t choose a medical procedure, ‘Antivaxers’.

We label frustrated people at Bunnings, ‘Karen’.

We label Christians, ‘Religious Bigots’.

We label anyone with a decent set of values as ‘Old Fashioned’.

We label people who ring the police on their neighbours for not wearing a mask as ‘dobbers’

I could go on, but you get the idea.

I deleted multiple paragraphs of this blog for fear of being labelled, as I have been on social media. So I will leave it there.

Anyway, that’s what I think.
