I listened to a brilliant message on Prayer on Sunday 23rd August 2015, by Ps Josiah Wall at Elevation Church. I am not going to give you a full synopsis of his preach, rather he shared a simple way that he engages with God through prayer each morning and I thought it was a great way to harness technology and start the day off in the Word of God: So that’s what I want to share.
The first two points of his preach on Prayer were that:-
1) Prayer is a conversation with God.
2) Let God start the conversation.
Expanding out this second point, Josiah observed that often our prayers to God involve us just talking to God. He said that the Word of God is God speaking to us and according to the following verse, all of the bible is beneficial to the believer.
2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Josiah outlined the methodology that Martin Luther used to use to spend time in Prayer and the Word. He would read a verse or passage and then ask three questions:
1) What in this verse can I glorify God for?
2) What in this verse do I need to repent for?
3) What in this verse do I need to ask God for?
Josiah then spoke of his habit in the morning when he first wakes up, he grabs his phone and often will flick through Instagram….a bad habit a lot of us can relate to.
So marrying all this together, Josiah said that he downloaded the YouVersion App, which is a free app of the Bible that has a Verse of the Day. He set his phone up so that he receives push notifications from the app that sends him the Verse of the Day as a text. So now when he wakes up….waiting for him is a text from God, where God is starting the conversation for the day and Josiah responds using the three questions from Martin Luther.
And I thought that was a simple yet powerful way to start the day with God starting a conversation with you as you wake.
Ps Peter
