Today in the U.S it is Thanksgiving. I thought I would write a blog about what I am thankful for. My first point then became the topic of this blog.
I am thankful for being 46.
Now a lot of people make comments about how I am getting old yadda yadda yadda. But here are a few great things about being 46.
The great thing about having lots of birthdays is that I have lived long. I know many people who would have loved the opportunity to turn 46 but they died young.
I got nothing to prove. When you are young you have to make you’re way in the world. You have to gain experience etc. At 46 I have success in my chosen career, have held multiple leadership positions, built a church, been married for 23 years, raised two amazing daughters and travelled the world. I guess what I am saying here is that I feel content.
I have the most amazing memories. Standing on the Great Wall of China, seeing Mt Everest, seeing my children born, opening the new Nowra City Church Building, meeting ex child sex slaves that we had financed the home that rescued and was rehabilitating them.
At 46 I have some treasured very long term friendships. There is a great richness that comes to your life when you have loved, laughed, wept and celebrated with friends for several decades. I am very blessed in this area.
I have some great stories. I have lived life fast paced, adventure focused and a bit of risk taking. This means I have some great stories to tell. My life is not and has not been beige. Good stories makes a person an interesting conversationalist.
At 46 I have a 17 year old daughter who just finished School and a 12 year old daughter who is about to start High School. It’s one of the greatest things in my life to be able to be a part of their lives as they grow up. I look forward to future careers and accomplishments, weddings and welcoming my children’s children into the world. (Sorry can’t use the G word yet).
I have been a Christian for about 30 years now and an active member of different churches for all that time. I can look back over my life and see the faithfulness of God. Life hasn’t always been easy for me, but God has walked with me the whole way. I love having a long term relationship with God.
Strange one this one. I loved the fact that I grew up before the Internet and before we lived our lives through a screen. I rode motorbikes, worked in an orchard, had a one acre Market Garden, skinny dipped in the dam, bush walked etc. And never once told people about it on Instagram. But it still happened.
At 46, I understand people more than I did at 26.
I love that I Iived in the 80’s. Dire Straits, U2 and black Michael Jackson, seeing the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, The original Footloose movie, The original Wall Street movie and no reality TV.
Anyway that will do. My point is whilst our society worships eternal youth, I am good with being 46.
Ps Peter.
