Biblical Financial and Business Wisdom – Citibiz Sermon Notes

This Morning I am speaking to the Business men and women of Citipointe Church at Carindale Hotel: Ministry is called CitiBiz. Here are my main points with related scriptures. I post these here as a service to the people who are in attendance so they can see the scriptures and have a record of the points.

Introductory Scriptures.

Luke 16:8

8 “The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light.

Deut 8:18
18″But you shall remember the LORD your God, for (J)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Thoughts from the Word of God related to Business and Finance.

1. Get Wisdom

Proverbs 8:15-18

15″By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
16″By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.
17″I love those who love me;
And those who diligently seek me will find me.
18″Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring wealth and righteousness.

2. Work Hard

Proverbs 6:6-11
6  Go to the Ant, you sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
8 Prepares her foodin the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest”–
11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond
And your need like an armed man.

So what can we learn from ants?

1. Ants teach performance.

2. Ants teach purpose.

3. Ants teach preservation.

3.1 They can discern the season.

3.2 They harvest when it is harvest time.
Harvest of souls in the present climate of Sept 11

3.3 Good stewards.

4. Ants teach participation in unity.
5. Ants teach perseverance.

3. Speak life over your finances

Proverbs 13:2
2From the fruit of a man’s mouth he enjoys good,
But the desire of the treacherous is violence.

Proverbs 13:3 “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”

Proverbs 18:2 – Death and life are in the power of the tongue

4. Be in Business

Luke 5:1-7
1Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;
2and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.
3And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
4When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
5Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
6When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;
7so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.

5. There is good debt and bad debt

2 Kings 4:1-6
1Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves.”
2Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”
3Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few.
4″And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour out into all these vessels, and you shall set aside what is full.”
5So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured.
6When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not one vessel more.” And the oil stopped.

Proverbs 22:7
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

6. Pay for Advice

Proverbs 24:6
6 For by wise guidance you will wage war,
And in abundance of counselors there is victory.

7. Always honor God with your finances

Deuteronomy 8:11-18
11″Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today;
12otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,
13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,
14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
15″He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its (E)fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He (F)brought water for you out of the rock of flint.
16″In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.
17″Otherwise, (I)you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’
18″But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Proverbs 3:9-10
9 Honor the LORD from your wealth
And from the first of all your produce;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

8. Protect your reputation

Acts 6:3 – Choose seven men from among you, men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom

Proverbs 22:1

A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

9. Avoid get rich quick schemes

Proverbs 28:20 – NLT
20 The trustworthy person will get a rich reward,
but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.

10. Be generous

Proverbs 11:25
25 The generous will prosper;
those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

Galations 6:7 – Sowing and reaping
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap

11. Stay Married

Proverbs 5:7-14
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
listen carefully to my wise counsel.
2 Then you will show discernment,
and your lips will express what you’ve learned.
3 For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey,
and her mouth is smoother than oil.
4 But in the end she is as bitter as poison,
as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave.
6 For she cares nothing about the path to life.
She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t realize it.
7 So now, my sons, listen to me.
Never stray from what I am about to say:
8 Stay away from her!
Don’t go near the door of her house!
9 If you do, you will lose your honor
and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.
10 Strangers will consume your wealth,
and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.
11 In the end you will groan in anguish
when disease consumes your body.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
If only I had not ignored all the warnings!
13 Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers?
Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin,
and now I must face public disgrace.”

12. Prosperity is for a purpose

2 Cor 9:8
8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;

13. Set Goals

Luke 14:28
28″For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?

Proverbs 21:5
5 The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage,
But everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.

14. Budget

Proverbs 27:23
23 Know well the condition of your flocks,
And pay attention to your herds;

15. Save

Proverbs 30:24
24 Four things are small on the earth,
But they are exceedingly wise:
25 The ants are not a strong people,
But they prepare their food in the summer;
26 The shephanim are not mighty people,
Yet they make their houses in the rocks;

Not sowing – Proverbs 21:20

20 There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise,
But a foolish man swallows it up.

16. Believe God for finances

2 Corinthians 9:10
10 Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness;
11 you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.

Isaac
Genesis 26:13
The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;

Gen 39:1

1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
2 The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
3 Now his master (saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus (H)the LORD’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

  1. Proverbs says a lot about prostitutes, doesn’t it? No wonder we are not welcome in the church today.

    • On the contrary, there was a prostitute in the lineage of Jesus, plus one woman who tricked her father in law to sleep with her after she dressed up like a prostitute, plus Bethsheba.

      • I’m referring to Proverbs 5:3-14 which you quoted.

      • I think that is referring to an immoral woman….who could be anyone. I read the scripture as a man who has an affair with a woman. Doesn’t have to be a prostitute.

      • It’s true it refers to any woman with whom they have sex with outside of marriage – effectively referring to a girlfriend, a fiancee, a single woman, a single mother, a mistress or a prostitute; however, in my experience, people assume it refers to a prostitute first, a mistress second, and then anyone else after that, which IMHO and again, in my experience, is why any female who falls into that category has been on the end of harsh judgement from people and through sermons, and have never been fully welcomed into any church.
