On the 20th February 2016, Tropical Cyclone Winston struck Fiji. Winston was the largest storm in the Southern Hemisphere to ever make landfall. Over 40 people were killed and the destruction was immense. As the National Director of Global Care, I have seen first hand the devastation. I put together a photo blog of my trip through the area. Click here to see those pics. In the immediate aftermath, the Global Care Disaster Response Management Team met and a strategy was devised to assist the people of Fiji. Finance was sent over within about 4 days of the cyclone to assist in emergency food, clothing and shelter needs. One of the major strategies was to send teams of tradesmen over to assist in the rebuild. Late March the first team completed their tour of duty, reroofing and rebuilding a church in the Ba area. One of the key values of Global Care in a project like this is “always build better.” Note the strapping in one of the photos. This building is much better now, better strapped and better equipped to survive the next cyclone.
Currently there is a Global Care container on its way over to Fiji, one being packed and will be completed by Friday 1st April 2016, and a third container will be sent by the end of April.
Currently the planning is underway for a second tour of duty, this time focussing on houses.
All this though has only been made possible by the incredible generosity of INC Churches, Network Communications and Social Media Friends and Friends of Global Care who have donated finances. On behalf of the people of Fiji…Thank you. Your assistance is so needed.
If you want to donate to the work of Global Care, the following image has bank account details.
Anyway, here is a photo blog that tells the story of the rebuild. Note the first three and last photos: What a difference. Its called the Global Care Effect.
I really appreciate the Aussies that went over to Fiji and the great Fijian team that both together worked tirelessly in the heat and huge humidity.
Thank you.
